Oral airways are useful to overcome anatomical obstruction that sedatives can cause during sedation procedures. They are used to manage urgent and emergent airway issues. Common functions of an oral airway include:
-Helping maintain an open airway in an unconscious patient
-Preventing a patient from biting and occluding an airway
-Protecting the tongue from biting
